Student imagination is sparked and possibilities for them as writers open up the minute you introduce an author as “a hero.” Picture books not only tell stories, but offer a treasury of opportunities to share important writing styles and illustrate a variety of techniques. It is my intention that by studying authors as heroes, students will understand the potential of the written language and unlock their own voices to be shared with the world.

In the classroom, we discuss how authors do indeed share amazing stories, but that authors are also the masterminds behind movies, songs, speeches, screenplays, sports plays, cookbooks, and so much more. Good writing makes everything possible! It is a way to have your voice heard by millions – no matter what the topic. I have witnessed how studying the author - in addition to the writing itself - brings in a whole new dimension for learning. It is the subtle difference between a baseball coach saying, “Hey, do you want to throw an amazing curve ball, or do you want to learn to throw a ball like Babe Ruth?” Which statement do you believe is feels is more inspiring and powerful?
